SANTAKA
SANTAKAは、リトアニア出身のドラマー兼プロデューサーMarijus Aleksaと、彼らの故郷ヴィリニュスで生まれたDJ／プロデューサー、Manfredas Bajelisのコラボレーション・プロジェクトである。リトアニア語で「合流」を意味するこの名前は、彼らの個々の歴史、芸術的な系譜、そしてより広い文化的なネットワークの融合を反映している。Marijusは過去10年間、Joe Armon-Jones, Bill Laurance, and Ashley Henry.など、コンテンポラリー・ジャズ界のキーパーソンとレコーディングやツアーを行ってきた。一方Manfredasは大胆なセレクターであり、リミキサーであり、Ivan Smaggheとともにドレスデンの共同創設者でもある。また、彼はRadio Vilniusの創設者でもある。
Herbie Hancockの『Rain Dance』やDon Cherryの『Brown Rice』からMiles Davisの『Bitches Brew』のスタジオ・テープ・スプライスの手法まで、ジャズ、エレクトロニック、ワールド・ミュージックの境界線を曖昧にした1970年代のフュージョンや実験的なレコードに対する共通の尊敬の念に根ざし、 Santakaはアコースティックとシンセティック、構成と即興の対話として生まれた。ドラム・マシーン、モジュラー・シンセ、Marijusのハイブリッド・パーカッション・セットアップを駆使して、デュオは濃密で予測不可能なコンポジションを作り始め、最終的にはヴィリニュスのフリー・ジャズやアヴァンギャルド・ジャズのコミュニティへの貢献と共に、サウンド・パレットを広げていった。
Byrd Out からのデビューでは、ジャンルにとらわれない音を披露した。その後、フィンランドのカルト・レーベルSähköからリリースされたSantaka EPでは、fourth world dubとリズミカルなマシン・ファンクをブレンド。彼らのXRAM EPは、Radio Vilniusレーベルを発足させ、管楽器奏者のSaulius Petreikisや、KhidjaのAndrei RusuやMindaugas Vadoklisといった過去のセッションのコラボレーターが職人技を披露した。Marco Shuttleによるリミックスが、このEPを深夜のミニマリズムへとさらに押し上げた。
State51からリリースされた最新作では、リトアニアのミニマリストRytis Mažulisと前衛合唱団Melos Collectiveの楽曲をSantakaが再解釈している。不気味で、重層的で、文化的記憶と未来的なサウンド・デザインの両方に深く根ざしたこれらの長大な作品は、カテゴライズに抵抗する、生きて呼吸する音楽を創り出すというSantakaのコミットメントを再確認させる。ジャズクラブ、ダンスフロア、あるいは忘れ去られたアーカイヴからの引用にせよ、Santakaは、アイデア、世代、可能性の合流点に存在している。
Yuki Nakagawa｜中川裕貴：
1986年生まれ、関西を拠点に活動する音楽家／演奏家。チェロを独学で学び、そこから独自の作曲、演奏活動を行う。
人間の「声」に最も近いとも言われる「チェロ」という楽器を使用しながら、同時にチェロを打楽器のように使用する特殊奏法や自作の弓を使用した演奏を音楽の様々なシーンや音楽以外の芸術ジャンルの中で展開している。
現代音楽～クラブ～演劇～ダンス～現代美術に関わる様々な団体やアーティストへの音楽提供や共同パフォーマンスをこれまで継続して行っており、昨年はオーストラリアのユニット「CS + Kreme」による最新作『The Butterfly Drinks The Tears Of The Tortoise』にもチェロで参加。
また2022年よりgoat、YPYでも活動する音楽家・日野浩志郎とのDUOプロジェクト「KAKUHAN」をスタートさせ、以降、同ユニットではRewire、Unsound、Moers Festival、Intonal、Outfestなどヨーロッパの主要な実験音楽フェスティバルに参加している。
2025年には初となるソロアルバムをリリース予定。令和6年度京都市芸術文化特別奨励者。
SANTAKA
SANTAKA is the collaborative project of Lithuanian drummer and producer Marijus Aleksa and DJ/producer Manfredas Bajelis, born in their hometown of Vilnius. The name, meaning “confluence” in Lithuanian, reflects the merging of their personal histories, artistic lineages, and wider cultural networks.
Marijus has spent the past decade recording and touring with key players in the contemporary jazz world, including Joe Armon-Jones, Bill Laurance, and Ashley Henry. Manfredas, meanwhile, is a foundational figure in Lithuania’s electronic music scene — a daring club selector, remixer, and co-founder of Dresden alongside Ivan Smagghe. He’s also the force behind Radio Vilnius.
Rooted in a shared reverence for 1970s fusion and experimental records that blurred the lines between jazz, electronic, and world music — from Herbie Hancock’s Rain Dance and Don Cherry’s Brown Rice to the studio tape-splice methods of Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew — Santaka emerged as a dialogue between acoustic and synthetic, structured and improvised. Using an arsenal of drum machines, modular synths, and Marijus’s hybrid percussion setup, the duo began building dense, unpredictable compositions, eventually expanding their sonic palette with contributions from Vilnius’s free and avant-garde jazz communities.
Their debut on Byrd Out introduced a genre-agnostic voice. The Santaka EP for cult Finnish label Sähkö followed, blending fourth world dub and rhythmic machine funk. Their XRAM EP inaugurated the Radio Vilnius label, featuring virtuosic contributions from wind player Saulius Petreikis and collaborators from previous sessions, including Khidja’s Andrei Rusu and Mindaugas Vadoklis. A remix by Marco Shuttle pushed the EP further into late-night minimalism.
Their most recent work, released via State51, sees Santaka reinterpreting the compositions of Lithuanian minimalist Rytis Mažulis and the avant-garde choir Melos Collective. These extended pieces — eerie, layered, and deeply rooted in both cultural memory and futuristic sound design — reaffirm Santaka’s commitment to creating living, breathing music that resists categorization.
Whether drawing from jazz clubs, dancefloors, or forgotten archives, Santaka exists in the confluence — of ideas, generations, and possibilities.
Yuki Nakagawa
Born in 1986, this Kansai-based musician and performer is a self-taught cellist who has developed a unique approach to both composition and performance. While drawing on the cello’s reputation as the instrument closest to the human voice, his style simultaneously reimagines the instrument—employing extended techniques that treat the cello as a percussive object, and using handmade bows to explore new sonic territories.
His work spans a wide range of genres and disciplines—from contemporary music and club culture to theater, dance, and contemporary art—collaborating with artists and collectives across diverse fields. In 2023, he contributed cello to The Butterfly Drinks The Tears Of The Tortoise, the latest album by Australian duo CS + Kreme.
In 2022, he co-founded KAKUHAN, a duo project with Koshiro Hino (of goat and YPY), which has since appeared at major European experimental music festivals including Rewire, Unsound, Moers Festival, Intonal, and Outfest.
His debut solo album is scheduled for release in 2025.
Recipient of the 2024 Kyoto City Special Arts and Culture Encouragement Award.
